The Long Haul Home

Thursday, October 17, 2024

We left San Carlos at 8 am after another filling breakfast.  Gate1 has certainly fed us well and with multiple options at each meal.

What a surprise to stop at Walmart in Hermosillo as our baño stop.  Joe and I used the time  to get some steps in.

Since Hermosillo is the capital of the state of Sonora, we also saw these beautiful places …

Metropolitan Cathedral of Hermosillo.  Built 1877-1908
Mass was being held while we visited
Across the square was the Governors home
Every wall on 2 floors were covered with murals
Some of the masks of the Mayo
So many interpretations could be had.  I could have spent more time here, but I heard we were BLESSED to even get in the Building.
Oh, good Lord …. we feel as chubby as we look!!!
Trees growing inside!
Ahhh, this warmed my heart.  It reminded me of the time I was covered in birds, years ago, in Venice.

Back to the motor coach and more miles towards home.  We made one last food stop; excellent chicken enchiladas.  Could I be tired of Mexican food yet?  Never.

At the Nogales Port of Entry into the USA, we had to disembark and take all of our belongings through customs.  It was actually a pretty efficient process, for which we were grateful, as we were all ready to return to the hotel where we started, 9 days ago.  We arrived around 5:30 pm.

We had a lovely group of 41 people.  Since we drove right by my house, only 20 minutes from the hotel, I invited everyone to stop by for a quick shot of tequila.  But our driver just kept on going.

The tour guide is the key to any successful organized tour.  And gratefully, we were blessed with a wonderful guide AND driver.

Olinsser, in the middle, was our driver.  He spoke only spanish, and Joe did a great job translating for us.
Rodrigo, on the right, was incredibly patient while sometimes “herding cats” and keeping everyone informed and happy.  With english as his second language, he was open to learning from us, as well as sharing a great deal of knowledge about his country.

I will hear Rodrigo’s voice and accent in my head for quite some time.

I have a new respect for the Mexican people and their culture.  Our countries are not all that different, as we both struggle with similar issues.  They’ve elected a female president for the very first time, which gives me hope that humanity is evolving to a more balanced place.

And, while traveling is fun and insightful …

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME.

Hunter’s Moon.  Largest of 4 supermoons in 2024.  The icing on the cake!

Any thoughts?
