Reykjavik

Tuesday, September 30 was our first of 3 days in Reykjavik.   Things were starting to slow down a little and that was fine with me.  I felt like I had received everything I wanted from this trip, and was ready to chill a little.

We jumped on a quick flight (35 minutes) from Akureyri to Reykjavik.   It was a little choppy due to the weather.  In Reykjavik, I was surprised at how far we had to walk outside from disembarking to the tiny terminal.  Maybe because it’s still fall?  Or  maybe because Icelanders are so used to the weather they don’t care.  The same way people were when I lived in Portland, Oregon, or how tourists think the desert in Arizona is way too hot.  Please keep thinking that ….

The gang

We enjoyed a nice lunch of  ling cod and then walked back to the bus in the rain.  We had a vicinity walk scheduled after lunch, and some of our group chose not to go.  I donned my rain gear and I’m glad I went so I could get a lay of the land.  And it stopped raining anyway.

The Concert Hall
Hallgrimskirkja, the tallest church in Iceland.  Lutheran.  And thats Leif Erikson
The organ inside is 49′ tall and weighs 25 tons!  It has 4 keyboards and 5,275 pipes!  The church benches can be turned away from the simple altar for concerts
The Rainbow Street
I enjoyed seeing this relief  map of Iceland to review our journey.  Inga said we saw about 1/3 of the country
The Unknown Bureaucrat

We got back to the hotel around four, and the group scattered.  I took a walk down the street and found this lovely little place to have a glass of wine and work on my blog.

After that I walked a few more blocks to have dinner.

My first fish and chips since being here!

I was definitely running out of gas.  I returned to the hotel and got semi-settled.  These are really tiny rooms, and I am so grateful I’m not sharing with anyone.

I turned on the TV for the first time on the trip and you won’t believe what movie I found … TOMBSTONE with Kurt Russell!!  He put me to sleep and boy did he …. 8 hours and 36 minutes for a score of 84.  And that is without a sleep aid.  Best of the entire trip!

    Hey Diana
I’ve been following your great adventure from the start.
I’ve enjoyed all your blogs and photos. I’m sure you’re going to enjoy returning to the warm weather of Arizona however.
    Safe travels home.

    1. FYI Created in 1994. It serves as a satirical or tribute monument to the anonymous, faceless civil servants who keep the country running, much like a monument to an unknown soldier but for a nation without a standing army. Would be fitting for the US right now too.
