Heraklion, Crete

Day 4:  Tuesday, June 6 2023

Oh my …. what a FABULOUS SITE to wake up to!

Sunrise was at 6:02
I found H&K on deck, as well.

We pulled into the port at 8am, and began our first excursion of the trip at 8:30.

Food on Foot

And boy, was it a LOT of food on foot!!  A short bus ride dropped us on the outside of their city center, and we met our guide.  She was a lovely Cretetian woman with a great accent.

We also really enjoyed our small group and the way she communicated with us.  We all had a small receiver around our neck with one earbud.  When she spoke, we’d hear her without having to gather closely around her.  We were joined by a lovely young family,  so there were only 9 of us.

And what did we do?  Walk around Heraklion and EAT!!  All traditional Greek food!!

Lovely marina area.  We were told that they’ve had HORRIBLE rainy weather up until just a few days ago!
When we started early, it was very quiet. All pedestrian streets
Our tour guide, Christiana, and El Greco
Our first stop for tea and some yummy Greek pastries
Holli took a doggy bag!
I wish we had a cheatsheet with the names of the food.  These had cheese and lots of honey
Next stop was the spice and herb shop.
Oh, THE AROMA!
The honey shop.  I liked the pine honey
The market.  We had a small banana here
Octopus!  Even though fishing is not a big industry for Crete
Ooohhhh …. the cheese shop
We had bites of even more traditional food here with shots of Rika.  Everything was so good.
YAMAS!!  Cheers!
Olives, olives everywhere!
And to top it off ….
GYROS!!  And this was the SMALL version!

We walked back to the ship after our tour and did a little shopping

Anyone who knows me ….

I did pick up a couple of things, but I need to remember that I don’t have much room in my luggage.  I can ALWAYS fit a pair of earrings, however!

Can hardly believe we still ate dinner after our food excursion,  but I’m so glad we did!!

That’s OUR WAITER, JoJo!
THIS was a surprise!

Tomorrow is Santorini … the highlight of the cruise for me. So, instead of having a nightcap, I had sleepy time tea.

In bed early. Big day tomorrow in Santorini!
