Juneau …. BIG DAY!

Tuesday, Aug 13, 2024

Our day started with a Food Walking Tour.  This is the third one I’ve done as the first two were in Crete and Victoria.  I think it’s a great way to see a place and enjoy their local tastes.  The best part of this tour was that only four of us signed up for it so it was quite private.  The other couple were from New York and they previously owned five restaurants in New York City, down by Wall Street. Very nice people.

I didn’t take a picture of the first place because I didn’t think of photographing all the food.  But  here are the others.

Our favorite place
Crab bisque with salmon ball with spicy dipping sauce
A combo of Alaska tastes including spruce tips and caviar
Rockfish tacos
Look at that ice blue tea
Halibut  ceviche
Quite tasty
The famous dog of Juneau, Patsy Ann
We took a stroll around town as well
Very unique three-sided totem pole
Thanks to Eric and Amber’s recommendation, we took an Express bus out to the Mendenhall Glacier
Nature’s air conditioning
We walked out to that waterfall
That’s a salmon working to get upstream.  No bears around

Kenny, our bus driver, to and from  the glacier, was a hoot.  He was a musician from Tempe and played his music and told crazy jokes the whole way.  He even pointed out a bear, the only one we’ve seen so far.

We were exhausted by the time we got back to the ship.  We thought about going to the dock tourist shop but instead decided to stay in and eat this …

LOBSTER TAIL!!

After dinner we all went to a comedy magic show and then an adult’s only stand-up comedian.  VERY FUNNY!

I am TOTALLY TRYING to see The Northern Lights, but unfortunately our ship had a second medical emergency and didn’t leave port until the middle of the night.  We were told to look north, but we were next to a big mountain, to the north.  But that didn’t stop Ivonne and me from strolling the WET top deck still in search of them.

Of course we just HAD to stop at the dance party and consequently didn’t get to bed until 2am with VERY TIRED bodies and SORE FEET.

Today …. 23,847 steps.

I’m so happy you made it out to the glacier. It looks so different from when I was there in 2010. We did a whale tour in Juneau in the pouring rain and then took a bus to a little hiking area in the pouring rain and then to the glacier in the pouring rain. When we got back to the ship, the guard that stands out next to the ship was in a glass i4 plastic human sized clear box. It was the weirdest thing. I was never so happy to get back to a room and out on warm dry clothes. I was also happy that we spent some time before the trip purchasing just the right rain jackets, fleece jackets and waterproof hats king boots.
