The beauty of northeast Arizona

In September 2024, Joe and I rented a car and hit the road for points north. We’re taking a week to explore NE Arizona, and here is just a sampling of what we saw during the first 2 days.

Our drive to Holbrook took us through the Salt River Canyon.
The King!
Our dinner restaurant in Holbrook where Joe got to choose his beer from what they called “the beer cabinet”
Holbrook, AZ … all of this petrified wood has been collected from private land, or so we hope.
FABULOUS columns at one of the gift shops outside of The Petrified Forest.  I would LOVE to do this at my house
There was a lot of petrified wood in the park.  200 million years ago, this was a swamp and trees fell in the mud
The landscape at The Petrified Forest was diverse and beautiful
This log was still completely in tact …. for now
Newspaper Rock.  Some of these petroglyphs are 2000 years old!
The Teepees
Stopped at Hubbell Trading Post on the  way to Canyon de Chelly.  I would NEVER have the patience to do this
Example of living in a hogan.  I am WAY TOO SPOILED for this lifestyle
Tour of Canyon de Chelly south rim begins
Too many pictures to share
And people LIVE in Canyon de Chelly.  Next time we’re here, we WILL do a tour so we can see the Canyon floor up close
Joe bought this beautiful piece for only $20.  Newton was painting at one of the overlooks.  We were happy to support him as there is sadly, much poverty in the area
The jewel at the end of the road …. Spider Rock
Car picnic
Can’t find the right words
Our Canyon de Chelly home for the night
My favorite way to eat on vacation …. Bed Picnic!
This is from The North rim drive that we explored on Monday morning
We are excellent travel partners

Not sure I will be able to continue this blog when we arrive at Monument Valley on Monday afternoon.  The beauty up here is so incredible that I don’t want to stay on my phone and miss anything.

But I will give you a taste of what’s next …. the view from our balcony at Monument Valley (The View Hotel)

THANK YOU, Beth Ann, for telling me about this hotel!

If you want to follow us, feel free to check out our Google photo album.  We keep updating that along the way.
