A Day In The Life

What a unique experience today was as we traveled north towards the top of Iceland.

We are currently at the blue dot, out in the country at a horse farm.  Vik at the bottom is where we visited yesterday (ocean, glacier)

It took all morning to get to the farm, but we drove through some gorgeous and different scenery.  And look at the sky!

We arrived at noon after a couple of pit stops; one of which I did NOT get out of the bus because it was crazy rainy and windy!

I hope to never complain about Tucson’s spring winds again

After arrival at the Daeli Guesthouse, we had a simple and yummy lunch of soups, homemade bread, and a sweet. Then we were off to meet their Iceland horses.

Look where they get to live!
They are so beautiful and smaller than what we see in the states.
This is Fabio, the stud!
The trainer gave us a crash course in the 5 different kinds of gaits. I personally have mastered NONE of them.
Their mane is just like our hair.  Some have long hair and some have short.  They have great peripheral vision; their only blind spots are directly ahead and behind them.

We then travelled out to his trees, of which on his 1000 acres, he and his father have planted 250,000 larch trees in 25 years!!  The government pays for the trees because they are good for the environment, they help to block the brutal wind, and the wood is needed.

We all got to plant a tree, out in the wind and just a little rain.  They do use a special tool that makes planting much easier.  But still …. 250,000???    This is my tree.  And you can bet that’s horse manure.

We then visited the farmer down the road to get his perspective on being a farm owner in Iceland. I was mostly impressed with the location of his farm ….

This waterfall is RIGHT NEXT to his property line
And that is his hot tub LOOKING at the falls!
This farmer was also a musician so he sang a few songs for us.

We got settled in our rooms and then met at 4pm for Happy Hour.

This is the cabin that I’m staying in with Kathy and Doug in the second unit.
My first double bed of the trip.  Standard bedding is a fitted sheet on the bottom with a fluffy duvet that opens over the top.
Kathy from Davis, CA, and me enjoying a Chardonnay from Argentina.
Joe, Inga (our tour leader) and Lister from Baltimore
Andrew & Jackie from Florida, and Gail from Silver City, in the buffet line for dinner.  All fresh food from their chef.

Everyone returned to their cabins after dinner, but I just had to stay up a little while longer to watch the clouds and the final light of the day.

Inga says no Northern Lights tonight, but I keep looking with a hopeful eye.

This area is so hauntingly beautiful with the wind that I had a hard time letting go.

SO I DIDN’T.   Tonight was a once-in-a-lifetime moment for me to be outside and alone, in the countryside of Iceland, watching the night and feeling the wind.   I lay on the picnic table, right outside of my cabin, and watched the clouds clear out until I could see the Milky Way!  It was reminiscent of the nights Dennis and I  slept at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.  The clouds moved back in and I thanked God for the opportunity to be here.

I LOVE ICELAND.

I think this is my favorite, aside from the puffins of course. I love learning about Iceland from afar! The horses, the Northern lights, the weather, the accommodations, the food, everything! It’s so fascinating. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I absolutely love it! ?????? And I’m so glad to know that you’re having a wonderful time! Carpe Memento, my TS!
