The Magical Day

Sunday, September 28th began with a Bucket List dream checked off my list ….

In the town of Akureyri
And from my bed!
Around 3:15 am
Not sure what the purple is …. maybe just a reflection?
Not all the rooms have these large windows so I feel VERY BLESSED
Anyone who knows me can bet that I never shut my drapes all night.  I’m on the 4th floor ..
And we still have 2 more nights at this hotel!

Between the puffins and the Northern Lights, my wish list for Iceland is complete.

My morning view.  Fall is such a great time to be here with the changing colors

Today was a very special day of clear skies, no wind, and  abundant sunshine.  Inga, who lives in this town, says this is a rare weather day.

Our first stop was Godafoss.  It had frozen overnight so the early morning was a little chilly, but crystal clear.

Can you see the faces in the rocks?

My system was a little upset this morning …. all these new and delicious foods …. and Inga offered me a natural remedy

Leaves of the Mountain Avens, their national flower.  And it did work!

We drove further east to  Myvatn Lake and surrounds.

The lake is very shallow and the water was like glass.  Beautifully still day.
Moving on a little further we came to Hverir, the thermal mud flats
Good advice!

Next was Grjotagja …. don’t ask me how to pronounce it.  But I can tell you it was a rift of the two tectonic plates.

Inga took a picture of each of us with one foot on each continent

Next was lunch with a demonstration on how they bake rye bread in ovens placed in the ground.

Oh, that bread with LOTS of butter and Arctic char.  He also offered 3 types of homemade soup.

After lunch, we strolled through Dimmuborgir, the land of the trolls!  This area was formed 2300 years ago during a volcanic eruption.  Legend has it that trolls lived here but stayed up WAY to late having a party (the original Too Much Fun Club!)  When the sun rose the next morning, the trolls were turned to stone.

It was fascinating to walk through
What does this look like to you?
This one is spooky to me
Now THERE’S someone dancing to their own drummer!
Then, this bench became
our own party central
Inga and our driver pulled out some treats …. Brennivin (The Black Death at 40% alcohol), Hakarl (poisonous then fermented shark), puffin eggs (chocolate, caramel, and licorice), and some chocolate bars
Berger, our wonderful bus driver
Three guesses what I thought of the shark.  But I enjoyed the shot!

We made just one more stop before heading home

Look at the reflection of the clouds in the water.  It would have been impossible to have a more perfect day

We got home in time to take a thirty minute nap before heading out to our home hosted dinner.  I will admit I’m starting to get a little tired.

This is the home of Thor and Petra (names have been changed because the Icelandic language is too hard for me).  They are both music teachers, and their nineteen-year-old son started flying airplanes before he got a driver’s license!
Our hosts served wolf fish for dinner.  Scary looking but very tender and delightful!

I was very happy to get back to my room, take a shower, and crawl into bed.  Of course, I’ve stayed up to work on this blog post, but I’m fading fast.  Some of our group took a northern lights excursion tonight.  But I’m hoping to have my own private showing from bed again.

Tomorrow is our last day in Akureyri.  I will always remember this day.
