The morning of The Northern Lights

After my grand experience of the lights on Monday night,  Sept 29th, I went to bed without blogging about the beginning of Monday.  So here goes ….

I did see the lights on Sunday night, which means I saw them all 3 nights in Akureyri.

And those who had east facing windows had a beautiful sunrise.

Inga told us that those colors could indicate volcanic activity!

We left at 8 am and drove about 30 minutes to Dalvik to go whale watching.

Can you pronounce those names??

I’ve been whale watching before so didn’t expect to have to gear up. But I forgot for a moment where I was …. the suits WERE necessary, although a process to put on.

Brian from Santa Fe and Lister from Maryland
Our great leader, Inga.  This is her hometown
Pam from Santa Fe is a hoot!
Mary and Lou from Georgia
Joe and Lister from Baltimore
Paul and Val from California.  They are deaf and I’ve learned a lot from them.
I know, Ms Poser.  Been teaching everyone The Four T’s
Our Captain
Uh oh …. I hope no one gets sick
We launched in Dalvik and went out to the blue dot.

The bay was peaceful, calm, and not REALLY cold.  But once we got out to that blue line on the map …. oh man!

Yeah, I was VERY HAPPY to have on so many layers.

We did see whales, and this is a great video from someone in our group

I wish I would have captured this video myself but grateful to them for sharing
But I did get one tail!
Yes, we saw humpbacks ….
The North Atlantic Ocean!  I got hit by one big spray right in my face, so now I can really say I’ve been there
Back at the harbor, look at the glacier that looks like a whale tail!!

We had lunch at a very local place:  all you can eat soup, bread, lamb, fish sandwiches, and salad.  We needed it after getting off the boat.

I went back to my room and stripped everything off and took a nap for about an hour.  Perfect timing to then get up for Happy Hour at the hotel.  The hotel had a lovely restaurant so we ate there.

$25.00 for this glass of wine.  Oh yes, it’s expensive here
Cindy from Boston and I split a Smash Burger and fries.  PLENTY for me.

You already know the rest …. The Northern Lights show.

I slept pretty darn well that night.  It’s a good thing as we had to pack and leave our hotel at 7:40 am to fly from Akureyr to Reykjavik for our final 3 nights.

    1. Oh, the Icelandic language is impossible for me. I struggle learning Spanish! There is a big debate here about whether they should maintain their language or not. I think it would be a shame if they lost it.
