Monday, May 4, 2026 …. a gastronomic day

We got a later start today as our Paella Cooking Class didn’t start until 11am.

Maria was our guide
We walked to the famous Boqueria Market where we  choose our seafood for the paella.
That is the calamari that we had to prepare ourselves.  I had no idea what a calamari even looked like!
But first, we made our own sangria and enjoyed some tapas
Neither Ivonne or I enjoy cooking …. we shared the fish prep duties
On the other hand, Lynda loves to cook
It was quite the experience putting this together.  Did you know it is the actual pan that is called a paella?
Maria made a very traditional and simple cake for dessert

We had a couple of hours to find our way to our next tour …. Tapas and Wine Walking Tour.  Since my mates  don’t have much knowledge of using their phone to find our way around, it fell on me.  I didn’t always do a great job, but at least we got where we needed to go.  And it started raining …

This is the Pont del Bisbe Bridge, which was adjacent to our next tour meeting location.  Known as the Bishops Bridge, this was built in 1929 by a protégé of Gaudi. It looks MUCH older.
Legend has it that one must walk backwards under the bridge to keep bad luck away
That skull is the bad luck
The Cathedral of Barcelona is 700 years old!!  We weren’t able to go in though, just missed the open hours

We met up with our Tapas and Wine walking group and went to 3 different restaurants.   It was all delicious AND filling.

This was the 2nd restaurant.  Look at that pig leg!  Yes, my veganism flew out of the window on this tour!
This last place was my favorite …. we had cava and some really yummy tapas here.

Did you know that tapas means “lid”.  Back in the day, they would put bread on top of their wine to keep the bugs out.  And tapas were born.

Our guide Ashley was very good.

We didn’t need anymore food today, so we went back to our VRBO for our last night.  Cruise starts tomorrow!

Hey!  The Barcelona Wildcat!
