Newport and Boston

Here we go on our journey north, on the Majestic Princess, for 7 days.

We have a cabin on the 11th deck on the starboard (right side) of the ship.  I’m so grateful that Beth Ann also likes to sleep with the balcony door open.  Ooooohhhh that sound!

Our first port of call was Newport, Rhode Island.  A first for me.

We had to wait for our tender, so why not?  We DID have breakfast first
Great name for a bar!

Because the weather is so drop dead gorgeous, our plan in Newport was the cliff walk.  Beth Ann had researched the free trolley, but our Maps was failing to find it.   So we caught a Lyft instead and finally made it to the cliff walk.

Our first mansion, The Breakers, built by the Vanderbilts in 1893-1895.  This “summer cottage” sits on 13 acres and has “only” 70 rooms
Looking north towards The Forty Steps
The original steps were wooden and built around 1850.  During the gilded age (1880-1920) it was an after hours spot for the servants to enjoy a little music and dance.  As you can see, the steps were rebuilt in granite in the 90’s
Nice long beach at the north end
We have seen some beautiful fall colors
We walked back to the ship and  stopped for a libation on the way

After our first dining room dinner, I got in a little dancing.  Tomorrow, Boston.

MONDAY IN BOSTON

Beth Ann had a business meeting early, so I had some time on my own.  We didn’t dock until 11am, so we enjoyed a diverse brunch in the buffet before heading out to explore.

The start of The Freedom Trail.  It’s so easy to follow the trail with special bricks in the sidewalk
Outside of the cemetary where Paul Revere is buried
And Sam Adam’s, too
When in Boston, one HAS to stop for   sweets at Mike’s Pastry.  Beth Ann has never seen it so crowded
The man himself with the Old North Church
When I was in Boston years ago with Cindy Rabbitt, we stayed here, sans the pastry.  Look at my short sleeve shirt …. it was 72⁰!
Copps Hill Burying Ground established in 1659!

There is SO MUCH HISTORY in Boston that spending one day is very inadequate.  When I was young, I didn’t care much for history, but now I would love to come back and really delve deep.

We returned to the ship to soak up more sun
We enjoyed a yummy seafood dinner at The Catch.  We were grateful we saved room for dessert!

Since I didn’t sleep well last night after dancing and drinking an  espresso martini too late, I was very content to return to our cabin to read and relax.

We have been so lucky with the position of our balcony

Tomorrow we journey further north to Portland, Maine.  It will be a very chilly and short stop, in fact the coldest day of the entire week, including NYC.  I may just stay on the ship while Beth Ann explores.

And I did stay on board …
