Wednesday in Saint John, Canada

This was an early and VERY COLD start to our day at 5am, but locally 6am.  It was in the low 30’s as we stepped off the ship before 8am.  I was prepared, however, with my Iceland long johns et al.

It was very interesting learning about the city of Saint John and its highlight, the Bay of Fundy.

Saint John is Canada’s oldest incorporated city established in 1785 by King George.  The city completely burned down by a single spark in 1877.  The population today is only around 70,000 and is very quaint.

Their claim to fame is The Bay of Fundy which moves 50-80 MILLION GALLONS of water with two tides per day.  That is more water than the combined flow of all the world’s freshwater rivers!

Our first stop was The Reversing Falls Rapids.  When we arrived at 9am, the tide was rushing out.
We drove another 30 miles to the small town of St Martins
On this beach we could see just how far the tide was out
The rocks were damp and trash free, except for this.   This truly was THE ONLY trash I saw!
There was a restaurant on the beach,  and we had THE BEST clam chowder with a biscuit and butter
The tide comes in at a rate of 1.5 inches per minute!
The trees were really showing off here
While continuing our tour though Saint John, we saw this statue
Honoring all those workers who have been injured or killed on the job

We ended the tour by returning to The Reversing Falls Rapids.  And now, the water was rapidly rushing back INTO the 480 mile-long Saint  John River.

Here are my videos showing the morning draining of the water, and only 4 hours later, it was rushing back in.

At 9am …. the water draining out to the bay
Around 1:30, the tide came rushing back in.  At extreme times, that rock would be completely submerged

It was incredible to witness this today, especially knowing that the west coast currently has king tides.

Back to the ship and an early dinner in the dining room.  Ordered the wedge salad, thinking of you, Robb and Anabel.  It was better than the last one I had.
And this was for you, Ivonne.    I must admit that the steak was very good, albeit the surf was a little small.  We learned most big lobsters go to China now.

We attended the it show tonight to see Kimberly Davis, formerly of the disco band, Chic.  She was powerfully good, especially from the 3rd row.

It’s been a long and chilly day.  We are back in our cabin early to get a good night’s sleep before our excursion in Halifax tomorrow.

I will admit that I’m a little pooped tonight.  It must be the cold temperature as it just cannot be my age ….

Tonight’s sunset

Any thoughts?
